Precision Psychiatry: Personalized Medication Management with GeneSight®

At Venice Behavioral Health, we believe that effective mental health care should be tailored to your unique biological blueprint. When treating conditions like depression, anxiety, ADHD, or bipolar disorder, the standard approach is often one of "trial and error"—starting a medication and waiting weeks to see if it works or if the side effects are tolerable.

Venice Behavioral Health combines clinical expertise with the science of pharmacogenomics. GeneSight® analyzes your DNA to reveal how you metabolize psychiatric medications, empowering our providers to deliver truly personalized care.

The Reality

Understanding the "Trial and Error" Struggle

Mental health treatment is not one-size-fits-all. Because everyone's body processes medications differently, a drug that works wonders for one person might be ineffective or cause severe side effects for another. This variability is often rooted in your DNA.

Rather than relying on trial and error, which can prolong your symptoms and delay your path to recovery, GeneSight testing provides actionable insights. It empowers our clinical team to make more informed, data-driven decisions about which psychiatric medications may be best suited for your body, helping you find relief faster.

What is GeneSight® Testing?

GeneSight is a scientifically validated pharmacogenomic test. It examines your DNA to understand how your body's specific genetic variations influence the way you metabolize (break down) and respond to over 60 commonly prescribed psychiatric medications.

Pharmacokinetics (Metabolism)

How your liver enzymes break down medications. Some people are "ultra-rapid" metabolizers (meaning the drug leaves the body too quickly to be effective) or "poor" metabolizers (meaning the drug can build up to toxic, side-effect-heavy levels).

Pharmacodynamics (Sensitivity)

How your brain's receptors interact with medications. This helps predict how likely a medication is to achieve the desired therapeutic effect.

Is GeneSight® Right for You?

GeneSight is not a diagnostic tool for mental health conditions, nor does it predict 100% of outcomes. However, it is a powerful, evidence-based support tool for individuals who:

  • Are starting a new medication for anxiety, depression, or ADHD.
  • Have struggled with medication side effects in the past.
  • Have tried multiple medications without finding adequate symptom relief.
  • Have a family history of sensitivity to psychiatric medications.

Not a diagnosis tool

GeneSight doesn't replace clinical judgment—but it significantly enhances it. Our providers integrate results with deep expertise to guide your personalized path to wellness.

"Precision psychiatry means no more guessing. With genetic insights, we shorten the journey from suffering to stability." — Natalie Farquharson, PMHNP-BC
